Rodents and Attics

Rodents are supreme hunters and scavengers; so, they can thrive even under the harshest of conditions so attics are like luxury suits to them. They have all their basic requirements i.e. food, water and, shelter are readily available there. Attics also provide warm-cushioned and well-insulated shelter where they can live freely, undisturbed. And attics being close to food and water sources become a very well-accessible home for these rent-free lodgers.

Food

Food is one of the basic requiems of all life forms. Rodents eat pretty much anything and everything available. Food is mouthwatering anywhere and everywhere. Their sharp sense of smell is used to track down the food sources. Rodents in urban areas have adapted themselves to consuming human-foods like, leftovers, foods dropped, foods left uncovered and unattended. They rarely have to hunt for food; the ready availability of food is a very important factor in their sustenance. They spread diseases and damage the properties. They nest in the attic’s space, where they dwell undisturbed for long periods of time. Are you hearing scratching sounds from your attic? You better contact some professional attic cleaners as soon as possible. They have huge and rapidly growing families so if you were casual by thinking that ‘it’s just one rat’, think again!

Shelter

Rats usually live in holes in the ground while squirrels live in tree holes but, in the cities where there are more buildings than trees, these animals have a hard time looking for shelters. So the attics, the least disturbed places in the houses!

The attics are not only the least disturbed place but are also very easily accessible. They can easily get in and out of the attic space, unnoticed and unhindered. They can climb in via the electrical wires or the water pipes or chimneys or even the branches of trees growing along the roof’s edge.
Plenty of routes of easy entry and exit make the attic a very desirable shelter.

To ensure that there are no rats running around in your attic make sure to keep it tidy and consult attic professionals so that they can seal off any and all entry points of the free lodgers. Make sure to check the insulation systems and ducts too.

Water Sources

Rats and insects or any microscopic animals like fungus and molds, cannot survive without water. Some may live on moisture which is water in its gaseous state.

This element plays a very crucial role when it comes to your attic being a home for the rats. If sources of water like, leaky roofs are present in the attic, rodents won’t have any problem finding their water source for survival. They won’t even have to look elsewhere; Channeled waterways along the edges of the attic will also be an easily accessible water source. Make sure that the insulation system is free from any water contamination and there are no leaks in the attic. Presence of water will also create dampness, which will harm the insulation and the floorings.
